THE TALL SHIP "FRIENDS GOOD WILL" SAILS INTO THE ST. JOSEPH HARBOR THIS FALL- ONE WEEK ONLY!
Nearly 200 years after the English burned the grounded sloop on the shores of Lake Erie, Friends Good Will has resurfaced in a manner of speaking. The Michigan Maritime Museum rebuilt a replica of the 1811 merchant and war vessel-with current safety modifications like GPS systems. Curious Kids’ Museum is partnering with The Maritime Museum to bring the Tall Ship Friends Good Will into the St. Joseph Harbor the last week in September, thanks to a grant from The Frederick S. Upton Foundation. “The purposes of the weeklong visit are to offer Michigan history lessons about the period of 1812 for 4th graders in Benton Harbor and St. Joseph elementary schools, and to give families an opportunity to learn about the ship and go for a short sail on Lake Michigan. This is the first time the sloop has sailed to another harbor!” said Patricia Adams, Curious Kids’ Museum Director. Friends Good Will has been given permission to tie up along The Arboretum by the City of St Joseph from Sept. 27 to October 1. A host of activities depicting the sloop’s exciting history and lessons in simple machines will be offered by the Ship’s crew in authentic costume with Great Lakes weather and additional Simple Machine lessons offered for classrooms at Curious Kids’ Museum. “Passengers will have a thrill hauling lines and seeing the power of her 6-pound cannon, just as a seaman in the 19th century” comments Barbara Kreuzer/Executive Director of The Maritime Museum. A fundraising family sail is offered on September 27 Tuesday from 5-7 pm and a Family Workshop and Sail are offered on Saturday morning from 10am-noon. Reservations for the classtimes are required and are open to Benton Harbor and St. Joseph elementary 4 grades—only, at this time. All lessons are correlated to the Michigan History and Science Standards.
