Web Site Hosting FAQ's
What is the difference between server hosting, web hosting, and domain hosting?
Server hosting is when you physically have a server in the Quantum office that hosts your individual web site. Web hosting is when you have your web site stored here on Quantum servers so that your site can be viewed via the Internet. Domain hosting is when you have your domain name hosted on Quantum servers and administered by Quantum. You do not need to have a web site in order to have a domain name.

Why should I have a domain name for my business?
Routing mail through a domain name allows you to be more professional as well as advertise your own company. In addition, domains make e-mail addresses easier to maintain for you as people join and leave your staff. This assures that your business stays with you, and doesn't travel with other people as they leave the company.

I just have a personal web site, can I host that with Quantum?
Of course! Most dialup accounts come with a web space allotted for this purpose.

How will my site be viewed to the outside world?
If you have a domain name, that is the address people will use to view your site. If you do not have a domain name, your website would be a subdirectory of the www.qtm.net (for example, www.qtm.net/~username).

I have a domain and I keep getting e-mails that say my domain is about to expire. Doesn't Quantum take care of that for me?
Yes we do. Those e-mail messages are really spam. They are trying to get you to switch your domain hosting to them. We take care of all registrations for all of the domains hosted on our servers.

I want to create a web site using FrontPage. Does this change anything for Quantum?
Yes. If you are creating a site using FrontPage or using another tool that uses FrontPage extensions, you need to have that site hosted on our NT server. If you do not require FrontPage extensions, you will be hosted on our UNIX server. If you do not choose between UNIX or NT, your site will be hosted on UNIX by default.

Other domain registrars are a lot cheaper, why does Quantum charge more?
Other registrars only advertise the actual registration costs. They do not include additional costs for e-mail and virtual e-mail addresses. Also, most other registrars have size limitations on their service that only allow you to send up to a certain size e-mail. Quantum's prices are all inclusive and do not have additional sub-charges. Quantum also does not have any file size limitations on how much e-mail or how large of an e-mail you can send or receive.
