JUNE MEETING

 “RECAP”

The 6/19/09 meeting was held at Andrews University Architecture Department Wood Shop hosted by Bob Bender and Carey Carscallen.  Bob Bender gave a formidable program on reviewing steps in creating a project from design on graph paper, selecting the wood and making a cut list.  Bob’s years of experience in this area make him a valuable resource when tackling any project and by following Bob’s format, success can be achieved.  Thanks Bob!!

The table project for Lakeland Medical is coming along nicely.  Tops were glued up and taken to Mark McCrone’s shop for final sanding.  Bob Brown and Wayne Rendell did a great job on completing the trestle part of the table in Bob’s shop.

Bob Scott brought his checkbook and is now an official guild member!!!  Glad Delapa could finally set the hook!  Kim Massa came as a guest and has a real interest in woodworking and joining the Guild.  Hope to see you at the next meeting Kim.

Jim Neuman led the discussion on the next Mark Adams seminar.  Scheduled tentative date is the first weekend in November.  The topic will be “Fundamental Woodworking” or “Cabinet Making”.  By a show of hands of those in attendance at the meeting, the group is leaning towards “Cabinet Making” as the topic.  All of us who attended last year’s presentation by Mark Adams were blown away and look forward to him coming in November.  Mark your calendars!!  Thanks to Jim Neuman for his work in arranging Mark’s seminar.

JULY MEETING

Tues. June 21, 2009

7:00 PM At

Mark McCrone’s shop in Benton Harbor

McCrone Custom Furniture & Cabinetry

The July meeting will be at Mark McCrone’s shop at 448 Cass Street in Benton Harbor with Mark discussing “FINISHES”.  Mark will show the way he finishes the current project he has underway.  It would be interesting to have others bring in a piece they have finished and tell their method.

Directions:  With all of the construction on Main Street in Benton Harbor, the easiest way to get to Mark’s shop is probably coming in from the Westerly direction on East Main Street (Bus 94) or from the Southerly direction on Paw Paw Avenue if coming from North of Benton Harbor.  When you reach the traffic light at the intersection of East Main Street and Paw Paw Avenue, go South on Paw Paw Avenue for one block and intersect with Cass Street.  Mark’s shop is at 448 Cass Street.

PROJECT OF THE MONTH

The project of the month for June was “unusual or different joints”.  Bob Bender brought in a great collapsible table and magazine holder, both utilizing different joinery.  John Delapa brought a scale model of a fantastic library table he is building.  The scale model had no glue involved, only different methods of joinery.  He also brought an extremely detailed example of marquetry he plans on using on this table.  Great work John!

Roger Bredewig did some strength testing of end grain joints using 4 parts water and one part glue.  The iron grip of Warren Snyder was able to break the joints but Roger is going back to his shop for additional experimentation.

The winner of the “Sawdust in the Hat” award for June was our very own President, Dennis Szymanski, with a nice dovetail jointed drawer with a curved from.  Congratulations Dennis!!

The project of the month for July is a “Tool You’ve Made or Repaired”.  Bring something you’ve worked on or repaired.  Have fun.
