APRIL MEETING

 “RECAP”

The 4/21/09 meeting was hosted by Dr. Tom Jennings, an Optometrist from St. Joseph. and attended by 17 members and one guest, Carl Tubbs, a woodturner.  Dr. Jennings gave a very good presentation on “Eye Safety for the Woodworker”.

The most common injury to the eye is the result of scratches due to foreign material in the eye.  Who can resist the temptation to rub an irritated eye (the worse thing you can do).  Wood particles in the eye can lead to fungal infections.  Most traumatic injuries to the eye come from the use of hand tools, not power tools.  Hammering a nail or other object is the leading cause.  Dr. Jennings has seen a number of blunt trauma injuries that occur when a wrench slips off a nut and the end of the wrench strikes the eye area.

What to do in the event of an injury, according to Dr. Jennings, “when in doubt, see a doctor”.  The longer you wait, the higher the probability of worsening conditions.  In the event of a chemical fluid in the eye, irrigate the eye with copious amounts of water, at least 5 to 10 minutes.  In the event of getting something in the eye, do not rub the eye, tape a paper cup over the eye to prevent rubbing and see a doctor.

The best way to prevent serious eye injuries is to wear approved safety glasses with side shields.  Polycarbonate safety glasses work very well.  Also face shields over top of safety glasses should be considered in some cases.  Remember, safety glasses on the top of the head don’t protect the eyes.

Thanks to Dr. Jennings for the presentation.

NEW MEMBER!

Please welcome back former member Andy Grootendorst from Coloma.  Andy is a professional woodworker and was one of the early members of the guild.

PROJECT OF THE MONTH

The project of the month for April was a “Clock”.  Roger Bredeweg won the “Sawdust in the Hat” award with a nice desktop type clock he made recently.  Looks like it will make a great gift.  Congratulations Roger!

The project of the month for May is a “BOX”.  This can be simple or complex.  The idea is to try something you may not have done in a while.  Let’s give Roger a run for the money with this project.
