FEBRUARY
MEETING The 2/17/09 meeting was hosted by Dr. Gyl Caseworm at Professional Hearing Services in St. Joseph. The meeting was well attended and proved to be very informative. The topic of the meeting was hearing protection for the woodworker. Dr. Caseworm informed us that 1 out of 2 people over 18 have experienced some hearing loss with a significant number of these losses due to exposure to noise. Many of the woodworking power tools that we use generate noise levels well over 100 decibels. Exposure to these levels of noise even for a relatively short period of time can result in some damage. Tools such as routers and planers produce noise levels in the 130 decibel range. Hearing loss due to noise exposure is preventable with the use of proper hearing protection and limiting exposure to loud noises. Expanding foam type ear plugs will give approximately a 20 decibel reduction to noise levels if used properly. Ear muffs give about the same amount of hearing protection. The most effective hearing protection is the custom molded hearing protection which gives approximately a 30 decibel reduction in noise levels. Indications of hearing loss can be ringing in the ears or being accused of selective hearing by our better halves. It is probably a good idea to get a periodic hearing test to establish a baseline hearing level. In many cases, the hearing screenings are free through Professional Hearing Services. In cases of significant hearing loss, hearing aids can be helpful. Hearing aids are not always covered by insurance. In some cases, Michigan Works can provide some assistance if you are employable. The bottom line for woodworkers, like safety glasses, wear your hearing protection when working with power tools. Again, thanks to Dr. Caseworm for a very informative and enjoyable meeting. |

PROJECT OF THE MONTH The project of the month for February was to bring a sign you made. The winner of the $25 “Saw Dust in the Hat” award was John Delapa with a stenciled sign and a hand carved sign. As one of his carving instructors used to say, “Bravo Johnnie”. John is a repeat winner and has issued a challenge to dethrone him as the reining winner of the “Saw Dust in the Hat” award. The project of the month for March is to build a “Bird House”. This can be a fun project and the birdhouses can always be donated to a good cause if you don’t have a direct need for one. |
THANKS TO JIM NEWMAN Thanks to Jim Newman for the 10” x 40 tooth table saw blades. Jim gave away new table saw blades that were taking up space in his shop to 6 Guild members. Life is good. |
