MAY MEETING RECAP”

The 5/19/09 meeting was hosted by Jeff Stark, thanks Jeff, and attended by 22 members along with guests Butch Lester, Jim Chellman, Jason Valley, and Kevin Hanley.  The topic of the meeting was making “Picture Frames” presented by guild member Ned Wollenslegel.  Ned and his wife Diane own and operate Waterfront Framing in downtown St. Joseph specializing in picture framing and artwork.

Start the framing process by selecting a molding style that makes the subject of the framing stand out.  Then select the matting.  Matting material comes in a couple of different types, paper matting and a cloth type material called Rag Mat.  The paper matting has a tendency to yellow with aging.  The Rag Mat does not yellow.  Ned discussed 3 types of glass material, Conservation Clear and Conservation Reflection control both of which provide UV protection and Museum Glass which gives excellent clarity and protects the picture from fading.

Ned uses a 12” Miter Saw with an 80 tooth carbide blade to cut the 45º miters.  He also uses saw stops to ensure each of the frame sides are cut to the desired length.  The inside corners of the mitered edge are touched up with a colored marker that matches the frame molding.  The frames are then assembled using white glue.  Underpinners (wedge inserts) are used to help draw the frame joint together.  Ned uses a putty and burnishing of the corners as needed to finish the frame.  Ned recommends using 2 hooks when hanging frames to give added stability.

Thanks to Ned for a great presentation and feel free to visit the store.

Architecture Dept.
At Andrews University

The June meeting will be at the Architecture Department at Andrews University in Berrien Springs.  Bob Bender will be discussing a project on how to make a Trestle Table.  This should be an interesting meeting in that the Guild is considering taking on this project as a Guild activity.

Directions:  Take old 31 to Berrien Springs.  Turn left (going South) at the main entrance for Andrews University.  Go left at the “Y”, the meeting will be in the building just past the gym on the left.  Look for the tall smoke stake, the building is close to the big stack.

PROJECT OF THE MONTH

The project of the month for May was a “Box”.  We had 6 entries with Jim Newman winning the “Sawdust in the Hat” award with a nicely turned, tight lidded, box.  Nice job Jim!

The project of the month for June is a unique joint technique.  Try a technique you’ve never done, it doesn’t even have to be a finished project.  Have fun.
