JUNE MEETING "RECAP" The June 2008 meeting of the BCWG was held at John DeLapa's shop. There were about 20 members and two guests attending. Guests: John DeLapa invited two guests, Dan Harbison and Bob PeArt. The meeting included two fine presentations: Wayne Rendell gave a quick demonstration of how to buff out a varnished finish using automotive finishing products. He started with a Catalpa board that had been sanded smooth and finished with several coats of polyutherane varnish. It was quite glossy and fairly smooth. The process was to sand if flat and smooth using fine grit (about 1000) wet-or-dry sandpaper, using water as a lubricant, and a hard sanding block. Then used a slow speed buffer and a couple of different grades of buffing paste (very fine and still finer yet, maybe?). The result was a very smooth and very shiny finish. The board acquired a different feel and sheen or shine at each stage of the process. The kit he used (the Presta Ultra Buffing System) is available at Painters' Supply in Benton Harbor. Al Fowler gave a talk about building a Windsor Chair. He had an example that he had made while attending a 5-day class at Berea, Kentucky. He also brought the fixture used to bend the "continuous arm" rail that caps the back of the chair. These chairs are built in the traditional manner using a draw knife and spoke shave to shape the spindles in the back from freshly sawn white oak, and a scorp to hollow the seat from a poplar plank. Holes for the spindles were drilled using a brace and bit, but the legs and stretchers were lathe turned. The parts were assembled using wedges and hide glue. The final product was attractive and sturdy. |
