JULY MEETING “RECAP”

The July 2008 meeting of the BCWG was held at Jim Neuman's shop. There were about 10 members attending. Jim Neuman invited Steve Burdick an experienced equipment mover and a beginning woodworker to join the meeting.
Jim opened the meeting at about 7:00 PM and gave details of a seminar to be presented to the Guild by Marc Adams. Marc runs a woodworking school in central Indiana during the warmer months, and provides seminars and workshops for groups like ours. There are several subjects available, and the members present showed most interest in "Joinery," "Getting the Most from Your Router," and "Fundamentals of Woodworking." We expect the seminar to be presented this fall, but the exact date and place are still to be determined
The presentation was put on (or maybe the members were put on) by Jim and Barry. Barry showed how they use common pieces of lumber scrap as practice pieces to hone your wood-turning skills, ah…and Jim demonstrated the basic steps used to rough turn a natural edge (i.e. with the bark still on the rim) bowl. Both stressed that if you want to learn to turn wood, you "gotta practice." Turning is a skill and you can't learn it solely by reading and watching; you have to do it!

AUGUST MEETING

Tues. Aug. 19, 2008
6:00 PM

At JEFF STARKE’S SHOP

The August meeting will be at Jeff Starke's shop, and will be the guild picnic. Jeff will demonstrate his Arbortech Pro IV Freestyle Woodshaper. It is a gizmo that goes on a hand-held grinder, and it's one of the few tools that Jeff owns that he has actually used. He offers that anyone interested can give it a try, but bring proof that your hospitalization insurance is in good standing.

DIRECTIONS: Kerlikowske Road runs N & S between Red Arrow Hwy. & Coloma Rd. Exit #1 or #4 off I-96 will get you there. Jeff's Place is just North of Lake Michigan Golf Hills (appx 1/4 mi.) Look for the "Christmas Tree" sign by the driveway.

Looking ahead...

September's project will be a stool or small table.

Loss of a member….

We got word that member Harry Bylsma passed away in May.  We will certainly miss Harry with his expertise and many stories.  The guild sent a card to his wife.

PROJECT OF THE MONTH

The Project of the Month was an item made with hand tools; Jim Neuman presented a small letter opener made of contrasting woods, and John DeLapa showed a spoon carved from Catalpa (of course). The Sawdust in the Hat drawing for participants in the monthly project presented John with a $25 gift certificate from Johnson's Workbench.

BE SURE GET THE BEST PRICE ON MATERIALS!

Vern Snyder and Barry visited Johnson's Workbench last week to set up the September meeting. We expect a presentation on steam bending of wood, along with some special discounts on Johnson's stuff. The store manager, Mike Mitchell, told us that we still receive our level four pricing on lumber, but that our recent rate of purchases does not really justify it. Level four pricing is normally given to those who purchase more than 1000 bd. ft of lumber per year, and represents a very significant savings. Please, buy your hardwood and supplies from Johnson's in South Bend and have them mark it as a Guild purchase. We want to keep this benefit!
