MARCH MEETING

“RECAP”

The 3/17/09 meeting was hosted by Barry Young and was attended by 21 members, one guest, Gordon Miller, and one new member, Brian Gardner.  The meeting started with a discussion of a proposal for the Guild to support the building of tables for Lakeland Continuing Care.  The project was accepted by the Guild with Tom Hurst acting as the Lead for the project.  Any members interested in helping, contact Tom.  This should be a good learning experience in addition to being a worthwhile project.

The topic of the meeting was how to turn a “Travel Mug” from a craft kit.  The travel mug kits are available from “Craft Supply” and “Woodcraft” along with other suppliers.  Once completed, these make excellent gifts.  Thanks to Barry Young for an excellent presentation and demonstration.

Barry started with a block of wood approximately 3 1/4” X 3 1/4” and squared up an end with a band saw.  He marked one side of the wood block by scribing with the band saw blade and then rotated the block and used the saw marked line as a guide to square the end with the band saw.  This gave a good square end for mounting in the lathe.  He then did a rough rounding of the shape using a roughing gouge and used a parting tool to round off a nub on the squared end for mounting in a chuck.  The block was then mounted in the chuck.  Barry then trued up the tail end of the block with a skew chisel.

The tough part of this project is boring out the center of the wood block.  Barry used a 2 ¼” forstner bit in a Jacobs Chuck to bore out the inside of the Travel Mug using a lathe speed of 400 to 500 rpm.  Once bored to the proper depth, use a scraper to fine tune the inside dimension for proper fit of the travel mug insert.

The outside shape is turned to final dimension, sanded and finished as desired.  Barry used a wipe on poly finish on a cherry block of wood for the travel mug resulting in a beautiful finish.  Again, thanks to Barry for the demonstration.

PROJECT OF THE MONTH

The project of the month for March was a “BIRDHOUSE”.  We had several entries for the “Sawdust in the Hat” award with Don Johnson taking the prize.  We also learned quite a bit about the habits of birds and the importance of the hole size, drainage, cleaning out the birdhouses and not using any finish on the insides of the houses.

The project of the month for April is a “CLOCK”.  This should be a fun project and there should be a lot of entries for the “Sawdust in the Hat” award.
